Maritime asset owners in Australia continually grapple with the relentless challenge of corrosion affecting all steel structures exposed to the harsh marine environment. Despite published corrosion rates, including those outlined in Australian Standards, they often fail to align with the actual experiences reported by various maritime asset owners across the region. The rate of corrosion exhibits significant variability, and appears to be lacking a discernible pattern, and is seemingly influenced by multiple factors unique to each location and asset. Consequently, there is a pressing need to conduct an in-depth research study based on actual observations from diverse locations across Australia and the Pacific Islands. This research will lead to the development of a comprehensive degradation model that considers not only corrosion rates but also incorporates the age of the asset and its history of repairs.
