INDUSTRY PROBLEM

Estimates of oil reserves and an understanding of the connectivity of oil-bearing pores in a reservoir are pivotal to the commercial viability and determination of productivity of a reservoir.  Such estimates are often made using rudimentary approaches and it is not unusual for the initial estimates of reserves in a reservoir to be vastly different to actual yields of the reservoir post-development. Similar difficulties are experienced in the mining sector where the ore grade and ore distribution are to be determined from a rock core.
