She worked as a software programmer at the Central Cadastre (Bulgaria) and has been at academic positions at UACG (Bulgaria), the Institute for Geo-information Science and Earth Observation (ITC, the Netherlands), Graz University of Technology (Austria), Delft University of Technology (the Netherlands) and Siberian State University of Geosystems and Technologies (Russia). Sisi joined UNSW Sydney in January 2018 as a SHARP (Strategic Hires and Retention Pathways) Professor.

Her research interests are in 3D modelling and more specifically Spatial Digital Twins, integration of BIM and GIS, 3D Indoor modelling, 3D representations, 3D data management and visualisation. Together with a team of excellent researchers, she advances the 3D capabilities of Spatial Information Systems. She is instrumental in facilitating BIM/GIS/sensors integration for monitoring and 3D analysis of urban environments. She supervises master and PhD students on topics related to 3D spatial modelling and analysis.

Sisi is the president of the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS )Technical Commission IV on Spatial Information Science, the treasurer of Urban Data Management Society (UDMS) and a co-chair of the Open Geospatial Consortium Standard Working Group (OGC SWG) IndoorGML and a member of several international bodies developing standards and policy documents. She is editor of the International Journal for Digital Innovation of The Built Environment, and Associate Editor of the International Journal of Applied Earth Observation and Geoinformation, and ISPRS Journal of Geoinformation.
